Symptoms in Soybeans to Watch Following a Rainy Spring

Categories: GROWING, SOYBEANS

Saturated soils and in-field flooding have become somewhat of a norm for corn and soybean growers in the current times. There are many implications for these type of weather patterns, which include soil conditions that become rather favorable for the development and spread of disease, such as Phytophthora, Pythium and Fusarium.
Closely scout your fields to stay on top of potential disease presence, but if you saw flooding in your fields in the beginning of the season, agronomists advise that you be even more mindful.

Take special notice of the following symptoms when scouting fields:
  • Crop discoloration: According to the Purdue University Extension, you’ll usually notice dark brown discoloration of the stem and lower branches during the stem rot phase of Phytophthora. In more mature crops, watch for yellow or white leaves.
  • Stand problems: Stand issues or a lack of emergence might also be an indicator of disease early in the season. If stand establishment is problematic, dig up the seed and check for seed rot.
Selecting the right soybean varieties can make all the difference. Golden Harvest Soybeans feature genetic resistance against Phytophthora root rot and other diseases.
