Don’t Skip Leaf Tissue Sampling

Categories: GROWING, SOYBEANS

While scouting can catch many issues, complete a soybean leaf tissue sampling early in the season to make sure you aren’t missing anything your eyes might not be able to detect.

Leaf tissue sampling provides you with a quick snapshot about your crops. Spending the time and money to conduct a sample will help you understand your crops’ needs better and ultimately maximize yield.

Leaf tissue samples can uncover the following details about your soybeans:

  • Nutrient deficiencies including nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur
  • Diseases such as Phytophthora root rot
  • The effectiveness of your existing fertility plan and whether any changes need to be made

Tissue sampling is best conducted during the V2 growth stage – which occurs about 3-4 weeks after emergence. Following the sample, adjust your management plans, as needed, to proactively avoid in-season hurdles and to help your crops reach yield potential.
