Raised on a family farm, Tom earned his bachelor’s from South Dakota State University. During his 20 years with Golden Harvest and its legacy brands, Tom has gained experience in seeds, crop protection, seed treatments and agronomy. Tom is a certified crop adviser and covering Golden Harvest agronomy in South Dakota is his passion.
For Tom, delivering the Service 365 year-round commitment to doing whatever it takes to optimize yield results starts by diving deep into each farmer’s situation. He follows that up by examining their challenges and making customized recommendations based on that information. “Data is very useful in showing different hybrids, but the experience of other farmers is just as important,” says Tom. “We have a broad portfolio with many different maturities and trait packages, so it takes a multipronged approach. As we’ve progressed into a row-crop state, some of the common crop diseases and insects have come along, too. It’s rewarding for me to be able to educate our farmers on dealing with these problems.”
Tom’s interests outside of his agronomic work tend toward outdoor sports, including hunting, fishing, camping, boating and water skiing. He even takes his small daughters fishing, but he cautions them to learn patience. “I tell my girls it’s called fishing, not catching, for a good reason.”
