Corn Hybrid Selection and the Top 3 Considerations

Categories: PLANNING, CORN

Seed selection is one of your biggest field decisions, and the entire season rides on it. With so many options available, it can be tough to decide which hybrids are the right fit for your acres. When looking at and evaluating hybrids for next season, keep the following top 3 considerations in mind.

  1. Stability: Each season presents new challenges, whether unfavorable weather, pest outbreaks or disease pressure. To prepare, select hybrids with consistent performance history. Identify hybrids that perform well across different locations and soil types. Adaptable hybrids with strong performance across a variety of plots will likely reflect similar success in your fields.
  2. Yield: After narrowing down consistent performers, take a look at yield. Purdue University Extension recommends searching for hybrids that consistently yield at least 90% of the highest yield in a trial and yield 5% above the average. For example, if the average yield in your area is 175 bu/A, look for hybrids approximately 184 bu/A or higher.
  3. Traits: Once the pool has been reduced to a group of solid, high-yielding hybrids, explore trait options. Select a hybrid with a trait stack to meet the individual needs of your fields, and help combat area issues you face, from insect control to drought tolerance. For example, if you have concerns about corn rootworm pressure, consider a trait stack with the Agrisure Duracade® trait, such as Agrisure Duracade 5122 E-Z Refuge®.
