Equipment Operation Risks and Safety Tips

As you return to the field for planting and spraying, here are some safety tips for reducing 8 operational risks on your farm. We hope you, along with your family and friends, have a safe and successful season.

OPERATIONAL RISK

SAFETY TIPS

Crush Hazards

  • Don’t stand near markers
  • Don’t approach moving equipment
  • Wear bright-colored clothing to increase visibility
  • Establish an “all clear” hand signal with the tractor and sprayer operator

Hand Injuries (Cuts/Scrapes)

  • Wear gloves when working around equipment

Shin & Leg Injuries (Cuts)

  • Always wear long pants
  • Pay attention around equipment for shin level hazards such as discs, coulter and residue sweeps

Hearing Protection

  • Wear hearing protection with at least a 24-noise reduction rating

Slips & Trips (Uneven Surfaces)

  • Be aware of your surroundings
  • Wear sturdy work boots with plenty of tread -- steel-toed recommended

Chemical Exposure

  • Follow all product label personal protection equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Note which seed treatment products require nitrile gloves, pants and a long-sleeve shirt

Lifting Injuries

  • Work within your natural limits
  • Don’t twist your body
  • Get a good grip
  • Let your leg muscles do the work
  • Bend at the knees when lifting and carrying with your back tight, holding objects as close to your body as possible

Fall Hazards

  • Don’t jump off equipment
  • Be extra careful working around equipment when footing is bad
  • Follow the 3-point technique for mounting and dismounting tractors by using two hands and one foot to add stability when entering and exiting
