Managing N in MN Corn Fields Experiencing Variable Rainfall

One question Minnesota corn farmers have been asking is, “Should I spend more money to keep my fields healthy?” Heavy rains and recent flooding across the Western Corn Belt have put the crop at risk for nitrogen (N) loss. With rainfall impact varying based on location, below are a few criteria to evaluate the need for N application.
  • Assess your fields: By getting a look at your field from a bird’s-eye view, you’ll be able to better assess the need for additional N. This method also allows you to review many fields in a short amount of time. To do so, consider observing aerial digital images or using a drone to survey your crop.
  • Perform soil tests: Soil sampling will provide a good representation of the N availability in soils. Be sure that your soil sample depth is 12 inches or more.
  • Work the numbers: Consider your crop insurance plan and discuss whether N application will be worthwhile based on your coverage.
If you’re still unsure whether or not your fields will need additional N, get in touch with your Golden Harvest Seed Advisor. Your Seed Advisor will use local, agronomic expertise to evaluate your situation and provide agronomic recommendations to help yield your best crop.
